Isn’t this fun? This little bag may look like it could sell itself because it’s just so darned colorful, but I learned there’s more to popularity and buy-appeal than just introducing a “pretty face” around town!

Here’s what I learned about producing a high quality custom-made product:

1.  First determine what kind of handbag you want to make.  If your ideas are not  yet formed, start by going to stores that carry handbags and see what you respond to.  Also, look through fashion magazines.

2.  Once you see what you’re drawn to, go to a textile show in your city.  Often, to be allowed in you need a Resale License (license to sell, basically) and you can apply for this through your State Tax office.

3.  When you go to the textile show, talk to reps of the companies and ask questions, like do they know of a handbag contractor for the type of bags you have in mind.  This is a good avenue because sooner or later the fabrics people buy have to be shipped to a bag contractor and even if it’s not the first place the fabric goes (I’ll explain later) it will wind up there.  Getting names  now can save you a lot of time and effort.

4.  You will need a name for your business to have on the Resale License.  If you’re not sure what name to use, choose something such as your own name.  This can be changed later.

5.  Before you go to a bag contractor you should have as much detail, including swatches of material, leather, lining, logo, snaps, bottom feet, zippers, connectors as possible to make good use of the time you spend with busy contractors.  They will appreciate your preparation.
